Your doctor may tell you to keep your head elevated for a couple of days after surgery, to keep the swelling down.

You will probably have head bandages for the first 24 hours which will be removed at our clinic the following day. For lower facelifts or chin liposuction, a chin strap (supportive garment for chin or cheek area) will then be applied, which needs to be worn 24 hours a day for the first week. In that time you may take it off for a showering and for short breaks. You may be advised wear the chin strap as much as possible in the second week after surgery or for longer depending upon the type of procedure.

You should be up and about in a day or two, but plan on taking it easy for the first week after surgery. Be especially gentle with your face and hair, since your skin will be both tender and numb, and may not respond normally at first. At the beginning, your face may look and feel rather strange. Your features may be distorted from the swelling. Your facial movements may be slightly stiff. Some bruising may persist for two or three weeks.

Your surgeon will give more specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities. Avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks; walking and mild stretching are fine. It's especially important to avoid activities that raise your blood pressure, including bending, lifting, and rigorous sports. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.

You will be reassessed in our clinic 7 days after surgery when your sutures and staples in the hairline are removed. Once they're out, the swelling and discoloration will gradually subside.

Normal day-to-day activities, including a return to work, can be resumed within 7 to 10 days of surgery, however most people feel ready to go out in public after 10 days to 2 weeks. You will be able to wear makeup to hide the bruising that remains.

You will subsequently be seen at our clinic 6 weeks and 3 months after surgery.

After the swelling and bruises are gone, it can take several months for the final result to be apparent. You'll have some scars from your facelift, but they're usually hidden by your hair or in the natural creases of your face and ears. In any case, they'll fade within time and should be scarcely visible.
