Face lift, technically known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure intended to remove excess fat and skin, tighten underlying muscles and re-drape the skin of your face and neck. The latest surgical techniques ensure that there is no stretching or distortion of the facial tissues involved as, some might recall, occurred with older style facelifts. Are Minimally Invasive Procedures an Alternative for Me?
As people age, the effects of exposure to the sun, diet, smoking, hereditary factors and the stresses of daily life contribute to the visible ageing of the face. These variables can create a premature appearance of ageing. For this reason, low invasive procedures involving minimal incision and dissection, are enjoying growing popularity among younger patients interested in improving their appearance. The effect of these procedures is to reduce wrinkles, plump up sagging or furrowed areas and rejuvenate or tighten the skin. They work very well to create a youthful appearance whilst the skin retains a reasonable amount of elasticity. Many people are happy to choose these small procedures to delay the need for a facelift.
Is a Face Lift the Solution for Me?
People generally in the 40-70 age range consider facelift as a more long term solution to their ageing appearance. It is important to understand that the ageing of the face involves not only the superficial skin layer which we observe gradually drooping and folding into creases. The underlying muscle support layer progressively weakens and drops from its position over the bone structure, changing the shape of the face itself. This change in facial shape explains why people look their age even if their skin is unwrinkled and why middle age brings with it a look of ‘tiredness.'
The benefit of a facelift is that it restores lost facial contour and definition by returning the support layer to its original position, producing a natural looking improvement.
What are my Face Lift Options?
There are a number of variations to the “full facelift” which target different areas of the face, depending upon personal requirements.
Brow / Forehead lift
Corrects a drooping brow, improving horizontal lines and furrows. Often performed in conjunction with eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), especially if there is significant skin overhang of the eyelids.
Mini facelift, also called S-Lift, Weekend facelift, Mid–Lower facelift
Lifts the lower part of the face not including the brow area. Reduces jowling, creating a smoother youthful appearance. May also be combined with a neck lift. Sometimes facial implants, eg. cheek implants, or injectable fillers may be used to create fuller or softer contours, or better facial proportion, eg. chin implants.
Jaw and Neck lift, Jowl lift
Lifts crepey neck, “turkey neck “, sagging jowls; redefines the jawline. May be done in conjunction with liposuction to the chin to eliminate a double chin.
Full face lift
All of the above procedures may be incorporated in a full facelift. This may be performed in conjunction with an eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty) or nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty), liposuction to the chin or jowls, or using facial implants.
Each of these facelift procedures involves similar techniques and recovery times.
The texture of the skin will not be changed by a facelift. A variety of non-surgical procedures are available to improve texture and appearance of skin such as chemical peeling or micro dermabrasion.
