Face Lift and Neck Lift

Having a face lift and neck lift can evoke the thoughts of someone looking unnatural and plastic looking. But with today’s advanced technologies and procedures a face and neck lift can be more effective and natural looking than ever before.

Instead of looking “tight and lifted,” you can simply look radiant and refreshed, healthier and younger.

Friends will ask not if you’ve had surgery, but rather, have you been on vacation? Did you lose weight? What exercise program are you on?

If you want to reshape your face and neck to restore your youthful appearance, then a face and neck lift could be the solution for you.

In addition to looking extremely natural, facelifts today now last longer than ever — as long as ten years and sometimes beyond. There have been many advances in surgical techniques over the past 30 years, no longer is the skin pulled back tightly giving patients the ‘wind tunnel’ look.

Today, we routinely tighten not only the skin but the underlying muscles as well. And that makes an enormous difference. Surgical face lift and neck lift is the most effective way to lift sagging skin but there are other non-surgical options to help your skin look and feel younger. These non-surgical options include Anti-Wrinkle Muscle Relaxants; Dermal Skin Fillers; Ultherapy®; Laser treatments; Fractora™ Fractional Resurfacing; CoolSculpting®, BodyFX™; Lipodissolve; and LED Light Therapy which we also offer at Cosmetic Image Clinics. To rejuvenate and give your skin a healthy glow we offer HydraFacials; and Chemical Peels can freshen-up and give your skin an even skin tone.

As with any surgery it is important that you have all the relevant information available to make an informed decision. All of our surgeons have had many years of experience performing this surgery and can assist you in determining the most appropriate course of action.

Are minimally invasive procedures an alternative for me?

As people age, the effects of exposure to the sun, diet, smoking, hereditary factors and the stresses of daily life contribute to the visible ageing of the face. These variables can create a premature appearance of ageing. For this reason, less invasive procedures, such as non-surgical ‘liquid’ facelifts involving Dermal Skin Fillers and Anti-Wrinkle Muscle Relaxant therapy and less invasive surgical procedures involving minimal incision and dissection are enjoying growing popularity among younger patients interested in improving their appearance.

These procedures help to reduce wrinkles, plump up sagging or furrowed areas and rejuvenate or tighten the skin. They work very well to create a youthful appearance whilst the skin retains a reasonable amount of elasticity. Many people are happy to choose these small procedures to delay the need for a face lift. However most people who embark on a face lift have sagging or drooping skin, they do require the more traditional style face lift rather than a Mini-face lift or S-Lift.

At Cosmetic Image Clinics we also offer non-surgical options to help your skin to look and feel younger which include Ultherapy®; Laser treatments; Fractora™; BodyFX™; and LED Light Therapy. To rejuvenate and give your skin a healthy glow we offer HydraFacials; and Chemical Peels can freshen-up and give your skin an even skin tone.

Non-Surgical options for younger looking skin:

Ultherapy®
The Ultherapy procedure can achieve a safe non-surgical eyebrow lift, non-surgical neck lift and non-surgical chin lift.  This procedure has been cleared by both the TGA and FDA, and the FDA has also now cleared it to improve décolletage or chest lines and wrinkles.

Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin and uses ultrasound to deposit focused energy to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin in the deep tissue layers. Consequently, skin will begin to firm, lift and tighten over time.

Laser treatments:

Carbon Laser Facial
The Carbon Laser Facial revitalises and freshens the complexion. This treatment works by applying medical grade carbon to the skin, then treating with the nano-second lightning fast Q switched Nd Yag Laser to stimulate and clean the pores, and promote the growth of collagen.

Laser Toning
The gentle laser light targets the deeper dermal layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, without damaging the outer layer of skin. This treatment assists in treating fine lines and wrinkles, scarring and also improves the appearance of the pores.

Laser Microdermabrasion

What is a Face Lift?

A face lift, technically known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure intended to remove excess fat and skin, tighten underlying muscles and re-drape the skin of your face and neck.

We offer face-lift procedures which remove excess fat and skin; tighten underlying muscles; and re-drape the skin of your face and neck.

Is a Face Lift the solution for me?

People generally in the 40-70 age range consider face lift as a more long term solution to their ageing appearance. It is important to understand that the ageing of the face involves not only the superficial skin layer that we observe gradually drooping and folding into creases. The underlying muscle support layer progressively weakens and drops from its position over the bone structure, changing the shape of the face itself. This change in facial shape explains why people look their age even if their skin is unwrinkled and why middle age brings with it a look of ‘tiredness.’

The benefit of a facelift is that it restores lost facial contour and definition by returning the support layer to its original position, producing a natural looking improvement.

What are my Face Lift options?

There are a number of variations to the “full face lift” which target different areas of the face, depending upon personal requirements.

Brow/Forehead lift
A brow or forehead lift corrects a drooping brow, improving horizontal lines and furrows. This is often performed in conjunction with eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), especially if there is significant skin overhang of the eyelids.

Mini Face lift, also known as S-lift, Weekend face lift, Mid–lower face lift
A mini face lift lifts the lower part of the face not including the brow area whilst using a minimised incision. Naturally, the effects are not as dramatic as standard face lift surgery and its popularity is not as great as the traditional facelift technique for this reason. It reduces jowling, creating a smoother youthful appearance. It may also be combined with a neck lift.

Jaw and Neck lift or Jowl lift
Lifts crepey neck or “turkey neck “, sagging jowls and redefines the jawline. This may be done in conjunction with liposuction to the chin to eliminate a double chin.

Full face lift
A  facelift can be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures such as eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty), forehead or brow lift, liposuction to the chin or jowls, facial implants, nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty), or radio-frequency skin-resurfacing such as Fractora™ Fractional Resurfacing.

When receiving a face lift, often patients will combine it with one or more smaller procedures to help minimise the overall recovery period. Many of these surgical face lift procedures involve similar recovery times.

The texture of the skin will not be changed by a face lift and this includes lines around the mouth and crow’s feet.  A variety of non-surgical procedures such as Dermal Skin Fillers; Anti-Wrinkle Muscle Relaxant therapy; Chemical Peels; or radio-frequency fractional resurfacing such as Fractora™ are available to improve the texture and appearance of skin.

What is involved in Face Lift or Neck Lift Surgery?

The face lift is either performed under “twilight” anaesthesia as an outpatient procedure or under general anaesthesia in a hospital setting and takes approximately two to five hours depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, extend in a natural line in front of the ear (or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear – see example of undetectable facelift scar after face lift in front of ear), and continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. This incision is designed for maximum camouflage to minimise scarring. If the neck needs work, a small incision is also often made under the chin to allow fat removal and muscle tightening in the neck.

In general, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and muscle below. The deeper layers of lax tissues are then tightened — which provides longer lasting and more natural results possible. After elevating the skin from the underlying tissues, liposculpturing techniques can be used to remove excess facial fatty deposits. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour.  Finally the surgeon takes great care to make sure the skin is made taut, but not overtightened. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions. The proper amount of skin tension is a crucial factor in beautiful, natural results.

The surgeon may then wrap your head loosely in bandages to minimise bruising and swelling.

Together, the tightened muscles and removal of excess skin and fat will diminish and often remove creases, lines, and folds and restore the younger natural contours of your face. Your jawline, cheekbones, and neck will become more defined and attractive as they regain their youthful, firm appearance.

What is involved in my Face Lift or Neck Lift Post-Operative Recovery?

Recovery is usually quicker and more comfortable than most expect. There is naturally some bruising and swelling, and normally a week of wearing a supportive bandage. Most patients are back to work and resume their normal activities within two weeks of the procedure — looking and feeling younger.

After surgery significant pain is not usually experienced. We will ensure that you have adequate pain medication to control any discomfort.

Some numbness of the skin is quite normal and will disappear in a few weeks or months.

Your doctor may tell you to keep your head elevated for a couple of days after surgery, to keep the swelling down.

You will probably have head bandages on for the first 24 hours. For lower facelifts or chin liposuction, a chin strap (a supportive garment for the chin area) will then be applied, which needs to be worn for the first week. In that time you may take it off for a showering and for short breaks. You may be advised to wear the chin strap as much as possible in the second week after surgery or for longer depending upon the type of procedure.

You should be up and about in a day or two, but plan on taking it easy for the first week after surgery. Be especially gentle with your face and hair, since your skin will be both tender and numb. In the beginning, your face will look and feel swollen and your features may be distorted from the swelling. Your facial movements may be slightly stiff. Some bruising may persist for two or three weeks.

Your surgeon will give more specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities. Avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks; walking and mild stretching are fine. It’s especially important to avoid activities that raise your blood pressure, including bending, lifting, and rigorous sports. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.

You will be reassessed 7 days after surgery.

The swelling and discoloration will gradually subside. Normal day-to-day activities, including a return to work, can be resumed within 7 to 10 days of surgery, however most people feel ready to go out in public after 10 days to 2 weeks. You will be able to wear makeup to help camouflage the bruising that remains.

You will subsequently be seen 4 to 6 weeks and 3 months after surgery.

After the swelling and bruises are gone, it can take several months for the final result to be apparent. You’ll have some scars from your face lift, but they’re usually hidden by your hair or in the natural creases of your face and ears. They will fade with time and eventually will be barely visible.
