Labiaplasty

Some women can feel self-conscious about the outer appearance of their genitalia. If so, the answer can be cosmetic genital surgery that involves reshaping the external appearance of the female genitalia, which is known as Labiaplasty.

Labiaplasty surgery (also known as Labia Reduction or Labioplasty) can help to reshape the external appearance of the labia by changing the size and shape of the labia minora.

Some women are born with large labia and others may develop this condition with childbirth or age. They may feel embarrassment with their sexual partner.

Women with large labia can experience discomfort during their everyday activities. Constant irritation or embarrassment may inhibit them from wearing tight-fitting clothing or swim wear. A reduction of excess tissue of the labia can improve comfort and confidence, with no loss of sensation or sexual function.

Vaginal cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst women seeking to improve their comfort and confidence, as today’s surgical techniques involve minimal discomfort, scarring and recovery time.

As with any surgery it is important that you have all the relevant information available to make an informed decision. All of our surgeons have had many years of experience performing this surgery and can assist you in determining the most appropriate course of action.

Why do women choose to have Labiaplasty surgery?

It’s not unusual for a woman to feel dissatisfied with her labia minora (the inner lips around the vagina), especially if they are asymmetrical, long or slightly bulky. Some women are born with large labia and others may develop this condition with childbirth or age. They may feel embarrassment with their sexual partner.

Sometimes during childbirth an episiotomy is performed which heals poorly. The resultant scar and extreme stretching may contribute to pain during sexual intercourse.

Labiaplasty surgery can repair this damage, alleviating the pain and restoring the appearance of the labia minora. Labiaplasty may also be performed in conjunction with a vaginal rejuvenation (tightening) procedure known as Vaginoplasty.

Vaginal cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst women seeking to improve their comfort and confidence, as today’s surgical techniques involve minimal discomfort, scarring and recovery time.

Labiaplasty is performed in a day surgery facility using twilight sedation or in a hospital using general anaesthetic. The procedure generally takes about one hour.

What is involved in planning your Labiaplasty surgery?

We understand the sensitive nature of female genital surgery and that the decision to discuss this procedure can be a difficult one. Be assured, that our team of doctors and nurses have had extensive experience in caring for patients undergoing this surgery. Our nurses will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have prior to your consultation with the surgeon.

In your initial consultation, the doctor will evaluate your health and discuss what can be achieved with the surgery. It is important that you tell the doctor exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help your surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.

What is Labiaplasty (also known as Labia Reduction or Labioplasty) surgery?

Labiaplasty (also known as Labia Reduction or Labioplasty) is a surgical procedure to reduce/reshape large or asymmetric labia to a size that the woman finds comfortable or aesthetically desirable. It is also performed for the repair of stretched or torn labia after childbirth.

What are the risk factors for Labiaplasty surgery?

Complications from Labiaplasty are infrequent. Every year many women have labia surgery, experience no major problems and are delighted with the results.

Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the benefits and the risks. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation.

What is involved in your Labiaplasty post-operative care?

After Labiaplasty surgery, you may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which usually disappears completely after 1-2 weeks. The labial incisions usually heal very well and are rarely noticeable.

You will be able to shower 24 hours following your surgery. We advise patients to have salt baths about 5 times a day during the early healing period.

In most cases you can return to work within 1 week, with swelling lessening within 1-2 weeks. However, patients recover at different rates and it is important that you take it easy during the recovery time.

In most circumstances, dissolving stitches are used and will dissolve on their own in 7–14 days. If at 14 days post-op you have remaining stitches, you should arrange an appointment with our nurse to have them removed.

We will explain all the information to you in detail during your consultation and pre-operative appointments. At Cosmetic Image Clinics within Aquarius Health and Medispa we understand the issues involved in making such an important decision and we are happy to discuss your concerns at any time.
