Skin Pigmentation

Are you suffering from sun damaged skin, redness, age spots, Rosacea or Melasma? These conditions are commonly referred to as skin pigmentation, which occur as a result of the body producing either too much or too little melanin. Skin pigmentation produces a darker or lighter skin tone that may appear blemished and uneven.

One of the main causes of skin pigmentation is sun exposure. Staying out of the sun in Australia is highly improbable, we all know to ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’, but even with all these precautions skin damage is still likely. Skin pigmentation can also be caused by other factors such as hormonal issues, skin trauma and congenital birth marks.

As with any skin problem a correct diagnosis is important, especially when treating skin pigmentation. Our clinic is medically supervised and therefore your skin will be professionally accessed, ensuring that your treatment is tailored to suit the pigment analysis.

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is the colour of a person’s skin. When suffering from skin pigmentation disorders your skin colour will be affected and your skin may look patchy.

There are several types of pigmentation and being correctly diagnosed is essential to ensure that your treatment plan is right for you.

What causes pigmentation in our skin?

As we mature in years, skin discolouration and pigmentation increases due to:

  • Sun damage
  • Hormonal stimulations
  • Genetics
  • Skin type
  • Inflammation to the skin, which includes acne, pregnancy and hormonal therapy, such as the oral contraceptive pill

Pigmentation can be caused by an array of skin concerns or conditions such as:

  • Freckles
  • Letigines or lentigos
  • Age and liver spots
  • Solar dyschromias
  • Moles
  • Seborrhoeic keratosis
  • Melasma or chloasma
  • ‘Pregnancy mask’ or pigmentation caused by inflammation, known as ‘Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation’

Where do pigmentation problems commonly occur?

Pigmentation concerns commonly occur on the face, neck, hands, chest or décolletage.

Pigmentation caused through injury:

Pigmentation can also be caused by inflammation or injury. Any condition that causes inflammation of the skin (such as acne, infections, or burns) can stimulate and cause over activity in the pigment cells or melanocytes. This causes a temporary increase in pigmentation which may even mimic scarring. This can last for a few weeks, to a few months to even more than a year in duration. Treatment for this can include depigmenting solutions and creams, IPL, laser, chemical peels, microdermabrasion as well as UV protection.

At Cosmetic Image Clinics we have a range of treatments to help with pigmentation concerns. You can be reassured that your skin will be professionally assessed in a clinic which is supervised by medical personnel. Some pigmentation problems can be potentially dangerous if not appropriately diagnosed.
