Pigmentation is the colour of a person’s skin. When suffering from skin pigmentation disorders your skin colour will be affected and your skin may look patchy.
There are several types of pigmentation and being correctly diagnosed is essential to ensure that your treatment plan is right for you.
-
As we mature in years, skin discolouration and pigmentation increases due to:
Sun damage
Hormonal stimulations
Genetics
Skin type
Inflammation to the skin, which includes acne, pregnancy and hormonal therapy, such as the oral contraceptive pill
Pigmentation can be caused by an array of skin concerns or conditions such as:
Freckles
Letigines or lentigos
Age and liver spots
Solar dyschromias
Moles
Seborrhoeic keratosis
Melasma or chloasma
‘Pregnancy mask’ or pigmentation caused by inflammation, known as ‘Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation’
-
Pigmentation concerns commonly occur on the face, neck, hands, chest or décolletage.
-
Pigmentation can also be caused by inflammation or injury. Any condition that causes inflammation of the skin (such as acne, infections, or burns) can stimulate and cause over activity in the pigment cells or melanocytes. This causes a temporary increase in pigmentation which may even mimic scarring. This can last for a few weeks, to a few months to even more than a year in duration. Treatment for this can include depigmenting solutions and creams, IPL, laser, chemical peels, microdermabrasion as well as UV protection.
At Cosmetic Image Clinics we have a range of treatments to help with pigmentation concerns. You can be reassured that your skin will be professionally assessed in a clinic which is supervised by medical personnel. Some pigmentation problems can be potentially dangerous if not appropriately diagnosed.
